There are about 200
children (!), both Christian and Muslim, attending our school. Some have
uniforms, as they were previously affiliated with a nearby school, a school
which is no longer in operation. When the surrounding villages heard about the
arrival of an experienced school superintendent, they decided to send their kids
to FIM school, and informally FIM school has essentially merged with the
previous school. Many of the kids live in distant villages and travel for miles
to attend school. On the leftmost picture, the two buildings which the kids are
marching in front have been part of the temporary accomodations for the school, on
loan from the chief. Tragedy struck recently when this chief passed away.
As displayed earlier, most of the kids sit in grass-thatch huts. The church building is also being used as a temporary accomodation.
Incredibly, while there are blackboards, there are not enough textbooks, and
writing materials are running short. These are obviously urgent needs, in addition to the need to
provide for additional staff to handle this huge number of students.
We hold and annual track and field competition at FIM school in Makaiba. But it's not all fun and games! Above, we also peek into English class.
